EMPIRE – While we wait for Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman to power up for big-screen outings, a different kind of heroine is making her way into our cinemas. She may not have a gold lasso or Kree powers, but Testament Of Youth’s real-life heroine, Vera Brittain (Alicia Vikander), had guts, determination and a single-mindedness to make the best of her gifts as a writer. If you could fly, too, she’d be a cinch for the Avengers.

The film’s new trailer provides a deeper context to her arc: the preconceptions of what a woman should and shouldn’t do in Edwardian society are the battleground she must negotiate before war comes and brings the real thing.

Playing the young poet, diarist and nurse is Vikander, while Kit Harington plays her fiancé Roland Leighton. As the Great War rumbles over the horizon, she must confront the ever-increasing uncertainty of her own life and the lives of her nearest and dearest. They all don the King’s khaki and march off to war. She does likewise in the uniform of a front-line nurse.

A star on the rise, Vikander also has Ex_Machina, Derek Cianfrance’s The Light Between Oceans, Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E., and the Tom Stoppard-penned Tulip Fever on the horizon. This one has former documentarian James Kent behind the camera, promising to marry a documentary aesthetic with the more impressionistic style of Jane Campion and others.

“There’s a poetic underworld that Jane Campion uses, nature and metaphor, and I love that,” Kent tells Empire, “and I think documentaries like Restrepo and Armadillo [are also references], because I’m a big documentary watcher. The marriage between poetry and raw material is what I was looking for.”

With Taron Egerton, Emily Watson, Hayley Atwell, Dominic West and Miranda Richardson in support, Testament Of Youth will be making its UK bow from January 16, 2015. Pick up the January issue of Empire – onsale on November 27 – for a full on-set report.

FLICKS AND BITS – Ahead of the release of film’s first trailer, this poster has arrived online for Alex Garland’s directorial debut ‘Ex Machina.’ The film is an intense psychological thriller in which Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a 24 year old coder at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a retreat belonging to the company’s reclusive CEO, Nathan (Oscar Isaac). Movies, The Seventh Son  •  By  •  Comments Off on ‘The Seventh Son’ Movie Release Date Pushed Back Again

FRANCHISE HERALD – The upcoming fantasy film “The Seventh Son” movie release date has been delayed again as distributor changes from Warner Bros. to Universal Studios. The cast talks about filming the movie in an interview.

“The Seventh Son” is an adaptation of a young adult novel titled “The Spook’s Apprentice” written by Joseph Delaney. The synopsis according to Amazon states, “A wonderful and terrifying series by a new writer about a young boy training to be an exorcist. Thomas Ward is the seventh son of a seventh son and has been apprenticed to be the local Spook. The job is hard, the Spook is distant and many apprentices have failed before Thomas. Somehow Thomas must learn now to exorcise ghosts, contain witches and bind boggarts. But when he is tricked into freeing Mother Malkin, the most evil witch in the Country, the horror begins…”

Thomas Ward is portrayed by Ben Barnes known as Caspian in “The Chronicles of Narnia”, and as Dorian Gray in the self-titled movie. He is joined by legendary actor Jeff Bridges who plays John Gregory, the Spook, as well as award-winning actress Julianne Moore who portrays the evil Mother Malkin. Other cast members include Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina”), Kit Harrington (“Game of Thrones”), and Djimon Hounsou who plays original character Rady.

Jeff Bridges talks about the movie during Comic-Con: “I’m a big fan of myth and mythology, and I saw this as a chance to make a modern-day myth. It also talks about good and evil. My idea is that good and evil are really different sides of the same coin.”

Kit Harrington shares his experience working with big names like Bridges and Moore: “I wanted to do this film ’cause I got to work exclusively with Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore, which is something I really wanted to do when I found out the casting. It was a really exciting, action-packed role. It was a lot of fun.”

Originally, “The Seventh Son” movie release date was set on February 22, 2013, but was pushed back to October due to production issues. As Legendary Pictures separated from Warner Bros., the rights to distribution also shifted to Universal Studies. This resulted to “The Seventh Son” movie release date to be set the following year, January 17, 2014. However due to Universal Studios scheduling, “The Seventh Son” movie release date is currently set further away, with a February 6, 2015 release date.
