DIGITAL SPY – Production has today (March 16) begun on James Kent’s Testament of Youth.
The World War I film tells the true story of Vera Brittain, who postponed her studies at Oxford University to serve as a nurse and then struggled to resume her life after both her brother and fiancé were killed on the battlefield.
Financed by BBC Films, the movie stars Alicia Vikander as Brittain and Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington as her fiancé, Roland Leighton.
“I am thrilled and honoured to be bringing Vera Brittain’s powerful and passionate memoir of war, love and remembrance to the screen,” said Heyman.
“We needed a remarkable actress to capture Vera’s range and complexity, so I’m completely delighted that the exceptional Alicia Vikander has taken on this role.
“And I am excited to be working with director James Kent,” he continued, “whose sensibility is perfectly matched to Juliette Towhidi’s deeply moving script.”
Filming will take place in locations such as Yorkshire, Oxford and London.
BBC Films head and executive producer Christine Langan described it as “one of the most potent and moving war memoirs ever written”.
“In this centenary year, there can be few more significant ways of examining the First World War and its phenomenal impact on twentieth century life and beyond,” she added.
