Light Between Oceans, Movies, The Danish Girl  −  By 0 Comments

DEADLINE – Swedish actress Alicia Vikander is getting two roles that all the brightest young actresses have been trying for. She is closing a deal to star with Michael Fassbender in the Derek Cianfrance-directed adaptation of the M.L. Stedman novel The Light Between Oceans for DreamWorks. At the same time, I hear that she is the choice of The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper to star opposite his Les Misérables guy Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl for Working Title. Her reps are right now working out the details so that Vikander can go from one film right into the other starting in the fall.

Vikander is the latest thesp in a wave of Scandinavian talent to break on these shores. Raised in Stockholm, Vikander began as a dancer before turning to acting. She’s gorgeous, but she is no overnight discovery; she has earned her way to this place. Her breakout roles were the Foreign Language Oscar-nominated Nikolaj Arcel-directed A Royal Affair, and co-starring in Anna Karenina, another Working Title production. Upcoming, Vikander stars opposite Ewan McGregor in Son Of A Gun, and is currently starring alongside Dane DeHaan and Christoph Waltz in the Justin Chadwick-directed 17th century love story Tulip Fever. She also stars in Testament Of Youth for BBC Films, which just wrapped, and opposite Oscar Isaac in the Alex Garland-directed Ex Machina and in the studio films The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and The Seventh Son.

The Light Between Oceans is the story of a lighthouse keeper on a remote island in Australia who with his wife rescues a baby they find in a rowboat and raise it as their own. David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford are producing. The Lucinda Coxon-scripted adaptation of the David Ebershoff novel The Danish Girl is inspired by the story of Danish painter Einar Wegener and his wife, and the love they shared even as he became the first man to undergo a sex change operation in 1931. Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner are producing with Hooper, Anne Harrison, Gail Mutrux, and Linda Reisman.

Vikander is repped in the U.S. by UTA. She’s also agented by Actors in Scandinavia’s Laura Munsterhjelm, and managed by Angharad Wood at Tavistock Wood.

First Look at Alicia Vikander in 'Testament of Youth'

THE FILM STAGE – With it being under two years since her break-out roles in A Royal Affair and Anna Karenina, Alicia Vikander is putting her rising star status to good use, with no less than six forthcoming films to her name. She has the major studio films (The Seventh Son, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.), the romantic drama (Tulip Fever), the promising sci-fi drama (Ex Machina), the intriguing crime indie (Son of a Gun), and today brings a look at her WWI biographical drama, Testament of Youth.

Seen above in the first still, Vikander plays Vera Brittain, a young Englishwoman who not only experienced World War I from the nurse’s perspective, but also chronicled those trials in her seminal memoir. Coming from director James Kent, the cast also includes Kit Harington, Taron Egerton, Colin Morgan, Dominic West, Emily Watson, Hayley Atwell, and Anna Chancellor, and as we await a release date, one can check out the synopsis below.

Vera Brittain, irrepressible, intelligent and free-minded, overcomes the prejudices of her family and hometown to win a scholarship to Oxford. With everything to live for, she falls in love with her brother’s close friend Roland Leighton as they go to university to pursue their literary dreams. But the First World War is looming and as the boys leave for the front Vera realises she cannot sit idly by as her peers fight for their country, so volunteers as a nurse. She works tirelessly, experiencing all the grief of war, as one by one her closest friends are all killed and the pillars of her world shattered. But, an indefatigable spirit, Vera endures, rediscovers love and returns to Oxford, irrevocably changed, yet determined to create a world in which such a war can never take place again.

Testament of Youth is expected to be released next year.

DIGITAL SPY – Production has today (March 16) begun on James Kent’s Testament of Youth.

The World War I film tells the true story of Vera Brittain, who postponed her studies at Oxford University to serve as a nurse and then struggled to resume her life after both her brother and fiancé were killed on the battlefield.

Financed by BBC Films, the movie stars Alicia Vikander as Brittain and Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington as her fiancé, Roland Leighton.

Gravity producer David Heyman is also involved in the Juliette Towhidi adaptation. Alicia Vikander in 'Testament Of Youth'

“I am thrilled and honoured to be bringing Vera Brittain’s powerful and passionate memoir of war, love and remembrance to the screen,” said Heyman.

“We needed a remarkable actress to capture Vera’s range and complexity, so I’m completely delighted that the exceptional Alicia Vikander has taken on this role.

“And I am excited to be working with director James Kent,” he continued, “whose sensibility is perfectly matched to Juliette Towhidi’s deeply moving script.”

Filming will take place in locations such as Yorkshire, Oxford and London.

BBC Films head and executive producer Christine Langan described it as “one of the most potent and moving war memoirs ever written”.

“In this centenary year, there can be few more significant ways of examining the First World War and its phenomenal impact on twentieth century life and beyond,” she added.

Alicia Vikander in 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'

VARIETY – Warner Bros. has set spy action-drama The Man From U.N.C.L.E. for a Jan. 16 release date in the U.S.

The film, directed by Guy Ritchie, stars Henry Cavill, Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander. It is based on the 1960s TV spy series.

Filming began in September in London and Italy in what’s described an origin story of the first pairing of the two spies — one American, one Russian.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is the fourth title set to open on next year’s Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend after Fox’s Frankenstein, Sony/Screen Gems’ The Wedding Ringer and Universal’s untitled Michael Mann project.
